Deepening Our Understanding of Oppression

Wednesday, July 30, 12pm MT – 2pm MT

This session will train attendees on how oppression and power around social identity operates on a structural level, using the 4 I’s of oppression as a theory. Attendees will be trained on racism as a foundational example of a system of oppression and will be presented with a deeper examination of anti-black racism in the U.S.

Each training will begin with a discussion or reflection question, followed by a PowerPoint presentation from Regan Byrd on anti-oppression concepts, intermixed with several group discussion break-out sessions. The goal of these trainings is to equip attendees with core language and concepts that can be used for additional intra-organizational discussion and strategic planning around diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will have common definitions and understanding of social identity, privilege, marginalization, and oppression.
  • Participants will have a broad understanding of how oppression operates within society and be able to name examples.
  • Participants will have examples and a framework for understanding racism and anti-black racism in the U.S.
  • Participants will have a framework for understanding organizational operations through an anti-oppressive lens.
