Bio | Rohan Walters is the principal designer of Spaces By Rohan Inc., an independent design firm working with architects, engineers, interior designers, businesses, property managers, and property owners. Spaces By Rohan Inc. has also been responsible for the complete development, design, and construction of two ‘alternative’ homes in Toronto: 157 Coxwell Avenue, 1292 College Street (The Triangle House), and 1294 College Street (The Driveway House). Two of the three projects acknowledged in UTOPIA, Towards A New Toronto, Coach House Books. The other, 1294 College Street (The Driveway House), has been published in the Globe and Mail newspaper. These houses represent Rohan’s ability to craft artistically, economically, and sustainably appropriate solutions in positive and unexpected ways, properties previously described as ‘difficult’. Rohan’s work has been featured in the Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, City TV various other media. Rohan has been a guest critic and lecturer at OCADU and York University over the years. My interest in Cohousing stems from: The ‘aloneness’ of many of my mother’s generation is something that haunts me a little as I watch them get older and lose their spouses and friends while clinging to the notion that they must somehow be fiercely independent. This observation, combined with the wisdom of having been a stay-at-home parent and community volunteer for many years led me to cohousing. Cohousing to me, as I had come to realize while studying the architecture and lifestyles of Europe was an appealing notion of sharing space, time, chores, shared resources, necessary obligations, safety, company, and quality of relationships with others in a chosen community. Additionally, taking a preliminary course with Charles Durrett and reading the book Creating Cohousing, Building Sustainable Communities, by Kathryn McCamant and Charles Durrett was further inspired to pursue the process of cohousing. |
